Ogdensburg mayor applauds Ontario Premier's move to withdraw electricity tariffs

OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg Mayor Michael Tooley offered appreciation to Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s decisions to withdraw a proposal to increase tariffs on electricity.

In a press release issued Tuesday evening, he said the city  is monitoring the ongoing trade developments between the United States and Canada, particularly Ontario’s decision to impose—and now temporarily suspend—a tariff on electricity exports.

The 25% tariff, initially implemented in response to U.S. trade measures, raised concerns about potential energy cost increases for local residents and businesses that may rely on imported power. With the tariff now suspended for 30 days, the city is hopeful that a more permanent resolution can be reached to avoid potential financial burdens on the community.

Mayor Michael Tooley acknowledged the temporary suspension as a positive step but emphasized the need for stability in energy policy.

“We appreciate Premier Ford’s decision to suspend the electricity tariff for 30 days, as it provides some breathing room for those who may have been impacted. However, this is still an evolving situation, and we remain concerned about what may happen if the tariff is reinstated,” Tooley said.

The city does not yet have definitive information on how this policy will affect electricity prices for residents and businesses. However, Mayor Tooley noted that any significant cost increases would be challenging for those affected.

“A 25% increase in energy costs would be difficult for anyone to absorb, whether at home or in business,” Tooley said. “Broader trade policies between the U.S. and Canada have economic consequences on both sides of the border. We hope that our two nations can work toward a fair and lasting resolution that protects communities like ours.”

The City of Ogdensburg will continue working with local, state, and federal officials to monitor developments and advocate for policies that ensure stable and affordable energy for residents and businesses.
