Michael Hammond stepping down after five terms

RENSSELAER FALLS – When residents in the Village of Rensselaer Falls head to the polls in November, they won’t find Michael Hammond on the ballot for mayor.

The five-term mayor has decided not to seek reelection, citing dedicating more time to his family and professional aspirations.

“After five rewarding terms as mayor of the Village of Rensselaer Falls, I have made the decision not to seek re-election this November. Serving our community has been both a privilege and a profound learning experience … one that has deepened my appreciation for public service and reinforced my commitment to leadership,” stated Hammond.

Serving the public comes naturally for Hammond, who followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and mother.

“Public service has been a guiding principle in my life. My grandfather, a former mayor of Rensselaer Falls, and my mother, who dedicated many years as Canton’s town clerk, instilled in me the values of responsibility, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to community. Their example inspired me to serve, and I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to work alongside so many of you to strengthen our village,” Hammond continued.

Over Hammond’s 10 years as mayor, significant improvements have been made in the village with future projects in the works for the next village leaders.

“Throughout my tenure, we have made meaningful progress together. From revitalizing our main street with new sidewalks and parking to ensuring our participation in the Canton Comprehensive Plan, we have laid a foundation for sustainable growth. Future projects, including enhancements to our village library and the development of a community center, will continue to provide vital resources for residents,” said Hammond. “These accomplishments were made possible through collaboration—between village leadership, dedicated community members, and local, county, and state partners.

“One of the most fulfilling aspects of my time as mayor has been working with the highway departments, private contractors, and municipal leaders to bring improvements to our community. Navigating state reporting requirements, managing budgets, and advocating for our village at various levels of government have all reinforced my belief in the power of strong leadership and strategic planning.”

Hammond said his commitment to educating today’s youth, currently as a building principal in the Gouverneur CentralSchool District, is the guiding force in his career.

“As I look ahead, my passion for leadership and education continues to grow. Having earned my School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL) certifications in New York State, I am eager to apply my experience to the broader field of educational leadership. The skills I have developed in governance—budget oversight, policy development, community engagement, and fostering strong partnerships—are essential in guiding school districts toward success. Just as I have worked to strengthen our village, I remain committed to shaping educational environments that empower students, educators, and families,” Hammond noted.

“While this decision allows me to dedicate more time to my family and professional aspirations, my commitment to public service remains unwavering. I look forward to continuing to contribute to our community in new ways, embracing opportunities that align with my passion for leadership and education.”

“Rensselaer Falls has a bright future, and I am confident that, together, we will continue to build a thriving, inclusive, and forward-thinking community. Thank you for allowing me the honor of serving as your mayor. It has been a privilege I will always cherish.”
