GOUVERNEUR— A man who allegedly struck a county Sheriff’s deputy in the face during a traffic stop was charged with felony assault Sunday.
Jay McKinney was charged March 16 with one count each second-degree assault, resisting arrest, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, and also received citations for vehicle and traffic law violations, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s office reported Monday.
A prepared statement from the sheriff’s office reports that McKinney’s charged stemmed from a traffic stop in the village of Gouverneur, during which he allegedly refused to provide his drivers license, became confrontational, and resisted arrest. McKinney also reportedly struck the investigating deputy in the face prior to his arrest, leading to the assault charge.
McKinney, who was on parole at the time of the incident, was arraigned in Russell town court and remanded to the St. Lawrence County correctional facility without bail.
