The unemployment rate in St. Lawrence County rose drastically in January, according to statistics released Wednesday by the state Department of Labor.
Unemployment in St. Lawrence County rose to 5.7 percent in January, up from 4.3 percent in December 2024, but holding steady with the unemployment rate from January 2024.
The statewide unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in January, the same rate as that month in 2024.
Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In neighboring counties, the unemployment rate in Jefferson County is 5.8 percent, down 0.1 percent from 2024.
The unemployment rate in Franklin County is 4.8 percent, up 0.1 percent from the previous year.
The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.
