CANTON — In recognition of April's County Government Month, the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau, in partnership with the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, is hosting the 2nd Annual Law Enforcement Day on Thursday, May 1, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the parking lot of the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, 17 Commerce Lane.
Law Enforcement Day was created as a fun and engaging way to bring students closer to the critical roles that law enforcement and emergency personnel play in our communities, organizers said in a press release.
After last year’s strong turnout, the Youth Bureau is again providing this hands-on experience for students of all ages. Youth will be able to participate in demonstrations, interact with emergency vehicles, and walk away with a deeper understanding of the many career paths in public safety.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for youth to explore careers in Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Emergency Services,” said Sheriff Rick Engle. “Events like this offer a chance to spark interest in these important fields, especially as we continue to see staffing shortages in public safety professions. It’s meaningful to see students ask thoughtful questions and consider these careers for their futures.”
Participating agencies will include the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Police, St. Lawrence County Corrections and St. Lawrence County Emergency Services.
Highlights will include canine and drone demonstrations, a look inside emergency vehicles, and a tour of the County Jail.
Emergency services will also have their mobile command unit available for interactive exploration.
“We are excited to celebrate County Government Month with a dynamic, educational, and fun event for our young people,” said Alexa Backus Chase, Director of the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau. “Law Enforcement Day gives students a chance to witness the professionalism, teamwork, and community dedication of our local agencies while also planting seeds for future career possibilities.”
Classes and student groups must pre-register to attend.
Space is limited, and time slots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
To register, contact Ken Taylor, Youth Development Program Coordinator, at KTaylor@stlawco.gov or call the Youth Bureau at (315) 379-9464.
