CANTON— Educational material is currently being distributed to help Canton residents navigate the town wide property value reassessment taking place.
Town Assessor Cindy Brand provided an update at the June 11 regular town board meeting Wednesday night, saying that an educational pamphlet was to be distributed to the public beginning Friday, June 13.
The town planned to mail about 2,500 of the pamphlets to every property owner in the community, and distribute others to public venues like Canton Free Library.
Board members made a point of noting that all revaluation education documents are going to be available in various forms, being careful not to exclude people uncomfortable with technology by offering everything digitally, or alienating or missing young people by offering everything only on paper.
“We want to educate as much as possible,” Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley said. Brand agreed that it is a primary goal to keep the public informed throughout the process.
The pamphlet will also include a timeline of the overall project, and is intended to arrive in Canton homes before a “data mailer” including details about the property arrives.
All materials being prepared by the town in reference to the revaluation are also being reviewed by GAR.
“We want to get this right,” Brand said.
The data mailer is also going to come with a cover letter from Brand to introduce the project and herself as the assessor.
If information on the data mailer needs correction, residential property owners can send the document back to the assessor’s office.
Brand asked that residents please send change requests to her office, not to GAR.
Commercial property owners, on the other hand, must return their documents to GAR if a change is needed.
