CANTON— The town of Canton has hired a part-time clerk to assist in the office of Town Assessor Cindy Brand as the town-wide property revaluation project marches on.
Lorraine Salamon was appointed to the position following a unanimous vote by the town board at a special meeting Thursday, Aug. 28.
“We’re very excited to have Lorraine,” Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley said Thursday.
Saloman will provide support to the assessor’s office for 19 hours per week, Ashley reported.
Ashley noted that Salamon was not brought on board exclusively for the purposes of the town wide revaluation project, but said the property reassessment will account for a “big part” of her duties with the town.
Ashley also noted that Salamon herself is a former assessor and sits on the Board of Assessment Review in the town of Louisville, making her amply prepared for the job in Canton.
Ashley also noted that the position is not a newly-created job, and is already provided for in the town’s current budget.
The town-wide property revaluation project is being completed in cooperation with assessment firm GAR Associates, which also performed recent reassessments in the town of Potsdam and the city of Ogdensburg.
Town Assessor Cindy Brand reported this month that her office has been particularly busy as of late, and is currently revising details contained in the “data mailers” sent to all Canton property owners.
The town has also entered a Memorandum of Understanding with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in order to share information and hold meetings during the revaluation.
