MADRID – The fifth annual Civil War Weekend at Fort Tribute will take place Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and continue Sunday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum, 1755 State Highway 345.
Highlights include visits to Union and Confederate camps, historical demonstrations such as period cooking and 1860s women’s fashion.
A featured addition this year is the traveling H.L. Hunley exhibit—a replica of the first Confederate submarine, which sank in Charleston Harbor on January 17, 1864. Visitors can view the submarine’s interior and learn about its history.
A period play, Now We Stand by Each Other Always, written and directed by Derek Maxfield, will be performed Saturday evening. Maxfield portrays General Ulysses S. Grant, while Dan Snyder plays General William Tecumseh Sherman. The three-act play follows a fictionalized conversation between the generals during key points of the Civil War, including Vicksburg, Cincinnati, and City Point. Jess Maxfield appears as Julia Grant.
Other activities include music, book lectures, artillery firing demonstrations, and a Children’s Muster, which illustrates how military units are formally assembled for inspection.
Battle reenactments will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., offering visitors a chance to experience the sounds, sights, and atmosphere of Civil War combat.
Balladeer Linda Russell will perform The New York Volunteer: Songs and Stories of the Civil War, accompanying herself on hammered and mountain dulcimers, guitar, and penny whistle.
Additional attractions at the museum include a one-room 1800s schoolhouse and log cabin, carriage barn, heritage fibers building, shingle mill, blacksmith shop, and historic farmhouse.
Fort Tribute, established in 2020, is a Civil War-era interpretive center located on the museum grounds. It features the only monument in the U.S. solely dedicated to Medal of Honor recipients from St. Lawrence County who served in the Civil War.
