CANTON -- Alice Frances (Race) Poole (nee Morris), age 84, Fredericksburg, VA, formerly of Canton, NY died Monday, April 28, 2025.
Alice was born September 15, 1940, in Ogdensburg, NY to Spencer and Frances Chapin Morris.
She graduated from Canton Central School in 1958 and then began employment at St. Lawrence National Bank (now Community Bank).
On June 4, 1960, Alice married Richard K. Race at the First Baptist Church in Canton and they operated a small dairy farm together on Morley Road.
Alice left the bank in 1968 to be a full-time mother and later served as a secretary to the St. Lawrence County Farm Bureau.
The marriage to Richard Race ended in divorce in 1982.
From 1981-2003, Alice was secretary to the principal at Northwest Tech BOCES in Ogdensburg.
Prior to retirement she became a Licensed Massage Therapist. This proved to be a successful career; still allowing her time to care for her property on CR 14, which had been the Morris family home.
This was a great time and place to learn to quilt and refinish furniture.
On May 10, 1997, Alice married James L. Poole at Brick Chapel, Canton. Jim died December 5, 2006.
On October 19, 2013, she married John Briggs at Brick Chapel. When this marriage ended in divorce, Alice moved to Fredericksburg, VA to be near her son, Kevin and his family.
Her life had been busy raising her three sons; watching and supporting their sporting events and school activities.
Alice loved to bowl and learned to play golf; but quilting became a full-time hobby. Many quilts have been donated to facilities that support victims of domestic abuse.
Alice was a woman of substance and is worthy of remembrance.
Alice is survived by her companion, James L Griner; her three sons, Allan K. Race of Worcester, MA, Andrew P. “Rewdy” Race and his wife, Jennifer Filipowski of Eagle, CO, and Kevin T. Race and his wife, Amy (nee Wisneskey) of Fredericksburg, VA; her five grandchildren, Joshua Race, Melinda Race (Adam Blumenau), Sadie Filipowski, Brayden Race and Margaret (Maggie) Race; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law.
Besides her parents, Spencer and Frances (Chapin) Morris, Alice was preceded in death by her sister, Charlotte (Rudd) Derby; and her brother, Phillip Morris.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, where the funeral service will begin at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
A graveside committal service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Fairview Cemetery, 190 Miner Street Road, Canton, NY 13617.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Found and Sons Funeral Home (10719 Courthouse Rd., Fredericksburg, VA, 22407) and Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, NY, 17 Park St, Canton, NY 13617; Canton Pee Wee Association, PO Box 523, Canton, NY 13617, or to Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave., Suite 401, Fredericksburg 22401.
