CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Historical Association invites the public to its June Brown Bag Presentation on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., featuring author and historian Sally Svenson. The event will take place both in person at 3 E. Main St., Canton, and virtually via Zoom.
Svenson will present highlights from her latest book, Adirondack Photographers, 1850–1950, published by Syracuse University Press in 2023. The book explores a century of photography in the Adirondack region, profiling around 225 photographers whose work captured the evolving landscape and communities of the area.
In her presentation, Svenson will spotlight photographers who documented industrial and resort sites across St. Lawrence County, including Cranberry and Star Lakes, Newton Falls, and Wanakena. Attendees will have the opportunity to view samples of historic photographs that illustrate the region's past.
Svenson has been writing about Adirondack history since the early 2000s. Her past work has ranged from studies of church architecture to biographies of lesser-known historical figures such as a Duchess of Marlborough. Her current research includes a manuscript on Adirondack theme parks from the mid-20th century, now under peer review.
A longtime New York City resident, Svenson spends her summers at her family’s home on Upper Saranac Lake.
Admission to the event is free for Historical Association members, with a suggested $5 donation for non-members. Pre-registration is encouraged. To register, visit the SLCHA website, call the main office at 315-386-8133, or email carlene@slcha.org. Those attending virtually will receive a Zoom link upon registration.
