It’s time to start thinking realistically. Right now there is a (Potsdam Central School) music teacher that has music lesson classes with four students in it. Four students! How can the music friends in Potsdam possibly justify that? They want to make class sizes so large at our elementary school that the students would not get the attention they need at such a crucial time in their lives. They would rather cut electives at our high school than their small group lessons. And, of course, they want to cut more from sports because that’s their favorite target at budget time to try and deflect attention away from the music department. With the renowned Crane School of Music in our backyard, why not work with them to help provide the music education that our students deserve? This could be from the college offering credit hours to student teachers who could aptly provide individual or small group lessons to our students either during the school day or after school. Why not invest your time and money into looking at alternatives that exist in our community and work together to keep our school strong, not just the music department.
