Forget Rooftop, fix Rt. 11

Posted

Last weekend’s Sustainable Living Fair in Canton showed what local people are doing to enrich their lives and improve the North Country economy without destroying what we’ve got here. It was great. The most important exhibit, in my opinion, was put on by a group called ‘YESeleven’. They are for improving Rt. 11 and against the ‘Rooftop Highway.’ They point out that upgrading Rt. 11 would create construction jobs now, versus the Rooftop, which is many years away if ever. They say improving Rt. 11 would create new local business opportunities, while the Rooftop highway would be a 170-mile bypass of Gouverneur, Canton, Potsdam, Malone, etc., and harm many local businesses. They produced a map showing where the Rooftop would probably be built. It’s obvious that it would destroy a lot of homes, farms, woods and wildlife. Improving Rt. 11 is affordable, but the Rooftop highway would cost billions to build and maintain, leading to bigger deficits and higher taxes. North Country people, wake up. Go to yeseleven.org and sign the petition and help build the sustainable future we want for our children and future generations.
