North Country This Week

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association is expected to announce if and when winter high-risk sports will be allowed to start in St. Lawrence County and the rest of the state.

The start of the season was delayed until Jan. 4 following a decision by NYSPHSAA last month.

Canton Central School Athletic Director Bill Porter said things did not look positive for high-risk sports seasons starting Jan. 4.

He said a statement could come as soon as today.

“I think we can all guess. Positivity rates are getting worse around the state and we’re looking at a tough situation.”

Low-risk sports are being allowed by the state. Each school can decide whether or not to participate in those sports.

At Canton Central, the school has not allowed boys swimming due to safety and financial concerns.
