I find it odd that the new county clerk, Mr. Regan, is being roundly criticized for eliminating one of the deputy clerk positions, apparently by the same people who are perfectly fine with the fact that our school districts are preparing to lay off hundreds of teachers and support staff. Odd that Mr. Regan’s actions and his stated intent to be a hands-on clerk.(who actually does some work in the office which may enable him to have only one deputy and save the county taxpayers about $40,000), are being attacked instead of applauded. Everyone knows that the position of deputy is a political appointment, and that a deputy serves at the pleasure of their appointing authority. And it’s certainly no secret that the woman Mr. Regan chose to retain as his deputy has been in the County Clerk’s office over a decade longer than the person who was let go. Also interesting is that those who are so critical conveniently forget to mention that the new deputy is not just also a Republican, but was in fact chosen as the Republican Mayor of Hermon in last week’s election.
