Alene Dorothy McCarthy, 72, South Colton, died Thursday, Dec. 13 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital while surrounded by family and under the care of St. Lawrence Valley Hospice.
Alene was born on Apr. 13, 1940, the daughter of the late, Charles and Nano (Gilmour) Fisher. She married Richard F. McCarthy Sr. on Sept. 14, 1957; Mr. McCarthy predeceased her June 15, 2005. Alene worked many years as a cook for St. Lawrence University and later for the St. Lawrence County WIC program until her retirement.
She enjoyed country music, crossword puzzles, playing on her computer, shopping at Wal-Mart and most of all, spending time with her family.
Alene is survived by her six children, Edward and wife Kelly McCarthy of Canton; Brenda and husband Clifford Flanagan of Canton; Richard F. McCarthy Jr. of Colton; Casey and wife Valerie McCarthy of Canton; Crystal McCarthy of Colton and Vicki Stark and husband Nathan of Colton. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Robert Selleck of Pierrepont and Dale Fisher of Oswego.
Alene is predeceased by three brothers, Donald and Michael Fisher and William Selleck and by a grandson, Jesse David McCarthy.
There will be no services.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Hannawa Falls Volunteer Fire Department, the Colton Volunteer Rescue Squad or to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.
