Burton J. "Poppy" Carr, 68, Ogdensburg

Funeral services for Burton J. "Poppy" Carr, 68, of State Rt. 68, Ogdensburg, will be held Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home, Ogdensburg with Lay Pastor David Clark of Pierrepont officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Heuvelton.

Friends may call at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home of Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Carr was stricken at his home on Monday evening and taken by ambulance to the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center where he was pronounced. His death was unexpected.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Delberta; 3 daughters, Mrs. John (Tina) Cobb of Heuvelton, Mrs. David (Tammy) Abbrid of Ogdensburg, Ms. Vicky Carr of Sackets Harbor; a sister, Mrs. Michael (Betty) Marino of Ogdensburg; a sister-in-law, Juanita Powell of Dunellon, Fla.; 4 grandchildren, Benjamin Abbrid, Aaron Cobb, Ericka Gerace, and Philip Defranco; 1 great-granddaughter, Maisey Gerace. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Predeceasing him was a grandson, David William Abbrid who died in 1988.

He was born in Canton on Dec. 6, 1942, the son of Merrill & Helena Sloan Carr. He attended Lisbon schools, and married Delberta Moore on July 6, 1962 at the Heuvelton Wesleyan Church with Rev. Charles McCallum, officiating.

He operated the Carr Homestead farm on the Ogdensburg-Canton Road all his adult life, semi-retiring in 1998.

He was an animal hauler who trucked dairy cattle and horses across the state for over 30 years.

"Poppy," as he was called, had a big heart and loved his family, his friends, and his jersey cattle, and his dog, "Jake" who went with him everywhere. He loved a good joke, and he hosted summertime antique tractor pulling contests at his farm for many years.
