Cornell Cooperative Extension again offering shooting sports program

CANTON – A shooting sports program with archery, shotgun, rifle and pistol training for youth ages 8-18 is being offered again this spring through the 4-H Cornell Cooperative Extension.

The program is held at the Norfolk Rod and Gun Club on Sundays 1-4 p.m. from April 30-June 11.

“Our shooting sports program is very popular,” said Maureen Ring, event coordinator.

“The 4-H motto is to learn by doing. Within the first 30 minutes, a bow and arrow or firearm is in each person’s hands,” said Ring.

Youth age 8 and 9 start with archery. Older youth can progress to air rifles and eventually pistols.

“The Norfolk Rod and Gun Club is a perfect place, with indoor and outdoor archery ranges, and shotgun, rifle and pistol ranges,” said Ring.

“Safety is the biggest concern. Our national program has never had a major incident in all the years of the program,” said Ring.

All instructors have had a 15-hour training program.

Orientation Night to learn safety rules and meet instructors will be April 26 from 6-8 p.m

Registration is now open through April 21.

There is a 30-member enrollment, and a waiting list if needed.

The cost to enroll is $55 for current 4-H members or $75 for non-members, which includes $20 membership fee to join 4-H.
