Threatening weather forcing St. Lawrence County school districts to cancel afterschool activities

Several St. Lawrence County school districts have cancelled all afterschool activities due to predicted severe winter weather.

A winter storm warning is in effect for St. Lawrence County from 1 p.m. to Thursday at 7 p.m. with heavy snow mixed with sleet and ice at times, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are possible, with ice accumulation from a trace to a tenth of an inch, NWS says.

Travel could be very difficult, the service says. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Snowfall could exceed one inch per hour at times tonight.

At the time of this website posting, Brasher Falls, Canton, Clifton-Fine, Edwards-Knox, Gouverneur, Hermon-DeKalb, Heuvelton, Lisbon, Madrid-Waddington, Ogdensburg, and Parishville-Hopkinton school districts are shutting down all Wednesday afternoon and evening activities.

Also, SUNY Canton classes will be all virtual after 3 p.m. today and all day on Thursday. See list of cancellations here.
