Clarkson professor elected Fellow of The American Concrete Institute

[img_assist|nid=333192|title=Sulapha Peethamparan|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=250|height=335]POTSDAM -- Sulapha Peethamparan, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Coulter School of Engineering at Clarkson University, was elected Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI). Being elected a Fellow is a prestigious recognition of an individual’s contribution to the ACI and the concrete industry. Less than 5% of ACI members earn this recognition.

The institute quoted in the award notification that “At the time of nomination, a Fellow shall have been a Member of the Institute, or a representative of an Organizational or Sustaining Member of the Institute, for at least fifteen years including three of the last five years. A Fellow shall have made outstanding contributions to the production or use of concrete materials, products, and structures in the areas of education, research, development, design, construction, or management. In addition, a Fellow shall have made significant contributions to ACI through committees and/or local chapters. A Fellow shall retain that membership rank as long as membership in the Institute is maintained or until elected an Honorary Member”.

She will be formally recognized for this honor at the Spring 2023 ACI Convention in San Francisco, CA.

Peethamparan’s research is primarily focused on sustainable concrete. Specific topics includes alkali-activated/Geopolymer low-carbon concrete, high-volume supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), and CO2 / NOx sequestration in cementitious materials, and recycling demolished concrete. She is a former recipient of the NSF CAREER award and a well cited author of technical publications.

Peethamparn has been an active member of ACI since 2007. She is the current chair of the Concrete Research Council (CRC), former chair and secretary of the technical committee 123- Research and Current Developments, former moderator of the Open Paper Presentation, and a voting member of committees on Material science of concrete, Durability of concrete, Sustainability of concrete, Alternative Cements, Nanotechnology of concrete, and Lunar Concrete. She is also a member of the American Standards for Testing Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers, and is an associate editor of the ASCE Materials journal.
