Grinch steals Christmas decorations from Norwood home

POTSDAM – This Christmas won’t be quite the same for a Norwood area woman, thanks to spiritless thieves.

State police confirmed they are investigating the incident which occurred Adams Road in the Town of Potsdam.

Laura Potts, in a Letter to the Editor to North Country This Week, expressed her extreme sadness from the theft of heirloom Christmas decorations and much more.

She said when they returned home from Thanksgiving, they discovered a four wheeler had been stolen. Upon further inspection, a bulk load of Christmas decorations was also missing from a loft in their barn.

“They carried away two large antique trunks which had been my mother’s. The trunks contained all the Christmas ornaments and decorations we owned,” Potts wrote. “There were exquisite hand blown glass ornaments made by local artisans, each one unique and a work of art.

Potts asked the public to be on the lookout for someone trying to sell the antique trunks and contents. Anyone with information is asked to call her at (315) 265-9645.

Potts said her husband gave her a special ornament every year, most of them from the St. Lawrence Historical Society.

“There were about 30 of these ornaments and many others from family and friends,” she said. “Besides the ornaments there were other Christmas decorations that had been in my family for years.”

Also stolen were a manger with carved figures and animals which had been in my parent’s house, wooden Santas carved and painted by her sister, a little green Christmas tree which was also a music box, nutcrackers from her parents, and a large straw angel from her mother that hung in the Potts’ farmhouse kitchen.

“All of these things are irreplaceable. Many were from relatives who have passed away and were all I had left from them,” she said. “These things were nothing to the people who stole them but were precious and priceless to me.”
