Funeral services for Elizabeth J. (Betty) Hannan, age 85, of St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011 at Frary Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Ms. Hannan passed away on April 19, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family.
Ms. Hannan is survived by two sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Dollinger of Spencerport, and Sister Kathleen Hannan of Yardly, PA; two brothers, Thomas Hannan and his wife Katherine of Ogdensburg, and Paul Hannan and his wife Catherine of Cleveland, OH; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Msgr. Herbert Hannan, Lt. William J. Hannan and Richard Hannan; one sister, Mary Hannan Dupont; and a brother-in-law, William Dollinger.
Ms. Hannan was born on November 17, 1925 in Ogdensburg, the daughter of Richard E. and Helen Fitzgibbons Hannan. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1943. She graduated from D’Youville College in 1947 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She worked for two years in the maternity ward at Hepburn Hospital. She later received her Master’s Degree at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Betty joined the faculty of A. Barton Hepburn Hospital School of Nursing in 1950 and remained teaching until its closing in 1968. Betty worked as a school nurse-teacher for the Ogdensburg School District until her retirement in 1985.
Ms. Hannan was a member of the St. Mary’s Legion of Mary, The Nocturnal Adoration Society, The Northern New York D’Youville Alumni, and The Ogdensburg Community Players and was also a Grey Nun Associate. Ms. Hannan enjoyed family gatherings, holidays, sewing and reading.
