Akwesasne Warriors down Alex Bay Privateers 3-2

ALEXANDRIA BAY -- Akwesasne Warriors goalie Nicolas Filion stopped 24 of 26 shots, including all 12 in the third period, and Dan Suave scored late to give the Warriors a 3-2 win over the 1000 Islands Privateers Sunday afternoon at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center.

The game was more of a defensive struggle than last week's contest between the two, in which Pierre Dagenais' shootout goal lifted his team to a 6-5 win.

The Privateers opened the game with a ceremony as part of their "Salute to the Troops Spectacular," sponsored by the US Army. Soldiers from Fort Drum joined the teams for the game, as the 10th Mountain Division Band played the National Anthem.

At the second intermission, both teams took part in an enlistment ceremony, as local youth took the oath to defend their country.

The contest certainly favored the defensive schemes of Mike Elberty and Mike Piquette.

The Warriors had early control and took the lead as Carter Trevisani fed defensive partner Anthony Sarno and beat Privateers goalie Josselin St. Pierre. Sebastian Panetta responsed by streaking up the wing and burying the Shawn Fensel pass past Filion.

The second period saw play tighten, as Warrior forward Addison Pelkey scored on a prolonged possession, assisted by Kyle Lagace and Drew Baker.

\Adam McAllister responded with a goal of his own, taking the feed from Ryan Pearson and Nikita Poliakov. Dan Sauve scored the game-winner off a pass from Pat Deraspe.

The Privateers continued to hack away but couldn't beat Filion.

The Warriors play next at home against the Danbury Whalers. The game is set for Saturday, November 13th at 7 p.m.
