Carey has hat trick as Saints, Broncos tie 3-3

Junior wing Greg Squires scored a power play goal from the center point with eight minutes to play in regulation time to tie the game at 3-3 and goaltenders Nick Pisellini of Western Michigan and Matt Weninger of St. Lawrence kept it that way through the rest of regulation and overtime as WMU and St. Lawrence skated to a 3-3 draw at Appleton Arena Saturday night.

The Broncos ran their unbeaten streak to five games since an opening loss at Canisius and are now 4-1-1. St. Lawrence is still searching for its first win at 0-3-3.

Saint freshman Greg Carey, who set a goal scoring record in the Ontario junior hockey league last season, recorded a second period hat trick to give SLU a 3-2 lead, but Squires tied it when his shot from the blue line eluded Weninger, who was screened on the play.

Both teams had great chances to come away with the win both in regulation and in overtime and each killed an overtime power play to hold on to the tie.

"I thought we brought good intensity to tonight's game and played a pretty solid hockey game," said associate head coach Bob Prier, filling in for head coach Joe Marsh for the second night this weekend. "It was great to see Greg Carey break out like that. We will see a lot more great offensive plays from him as his career progresses.

"We have been struggling a little bit to score goals, but I thought we created some great chances tonight and could have had a few more. We need to just keep working and playing hard and the wins will start to come."

The Broncos jumped on top when they were able to turn around a Saint shorthanded scoring bid late in the first period. Junior wing Greg Squires broke out with senior center Max Campbell on a two-on-one and Campbell put his third of the season in off the far post from the right faceoff circle at 16:28 for the power play goal.

Carey scored his first collegiate goal at 2:10 of the second to tie it at 1-1 as he took a pass from freshman defenseman Riley Austin and stuffed the puck past WMU goalie Nick Pisellini on the stick side. The Broncos came back to take a 2-1 lead when senior Ryan Watson stripped a Saint defender of the puck and broke in on SLU goalie Matt Weninger, stuffing the puck between his pads from point blank range at 5:38, but Carey came back with consecutive goals to complete his hat trick and put the Saints in front.

His second of the night came in a scramble in front of Pisellini as he jammed the puck under the goalie's pads after Pisellini saved a hard shot by Aaron Bogosian at 9:19. Carey's third of the night came on a power play as he took the puck from senior defenseman Matt Raley, walked in and snapped a shot inside the far post at 13:25.

Weninger finished with 26 saves for the Saints while Pisinelli had 22 for the Broncos.
