Mr. Alfred L. Mitchell, 83, of 325 Wade LaFrance Road, passed away on Thursday morning, October 14, 2010, at IAK HIH SOH THA, Home for the Elderly, where he had been a resident for the past 3 weeks. He had been in failing health for the few months.
Alfred was born October 31, 1926 in Akwesasne, the son of Alex and Charlotte Swamp Mitchell. He attended school on St. Regis Island. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. On November 17, 1951, he married Bessie Ransom at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating.
Alfred was an ironworker with Local #440 for nearly 40 years, worked throughout the country. During his tenure, he helped in the reconstruction of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. He was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479. He enjoyed horses, farming and was an avid Boston Bruins hockey fan. Alfred also enjoyed leisure car rides with this wife and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Alfred is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Bessie; nine children, Janet Tatro and her husband, Lee of Westville, Roger A. Mitchell, Akwesasne, Ontario, Louie Mitchell and his wife, Doreen of Akwesasne, Quebec; Carol Anderson and her husband, Roger of Six Nations, Carl Mitchell and his wife, Karen of Akwesasne, Ontario, Terry McDonald and her husband, Jerry of Akwesasne, Quebec, Kelly Mitchell and his wife, Theresa of Akwesasne, Quebec, Keith Mitchell and his wife, Cindy of Akwesasne, Quebec and Shannon Mitchell of Fort Wayne, IN; 23 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; a sister, Florine Morgan of Camden, Arkansas; a brother, Theodore Mitchell and his wife, Sarah of Akwesasne, Quebec; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Faye Mitchell; a grandson, Jovi Thompson; four sisters, Agnes Lazore, Cecelia Lazore, Mary LaFrance, and Nora Jacobs; and four brothers, Joseph, Mose, William, and Kenneth Mitchell.
Friends may call at the Akwesasne Homemakers, beginning 2:00 p.m. Friday until 12:00 noon, Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 1:00 p.m. at St. Regis Catholic Church, with Rev. George H. Belgarde, SJ, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
