St. Lawrence County calls for repeal of SAFE Act, denies state use of county seal

More than 40 people reportedly attended a St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators meeting Monday to support a resolution calling for the repeal of the SAFE Act.

The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators passed a resolution that denied the state use of its seal in regards to the SAFE Act and called for the controversial state law to be repealed in its entirely.

According to the resolution the “New York State Police have expressed interest in utilizing the seals of the state's counties on their website and on pistol permit recertification documents sent to current permit holders, which would have the effect of implying that those documents were created and distributed by the counties wherein those recipients reside.”

The resolution states that the New York State County Clerks Association, the New York State Sheriffs Association, and the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) support the denial of permission for the State of New York and the New York State Police to use the Seals of the counties, their letterhead, and their names for the purpose of corresponding or communicating in any way with permitted gun owners for any purpose associated with the NY SAFE Act.

The proposed resolution also calls on state lawmakers to repeal the SAFE Act in its entirety.

“While we appreciate the attempt by the NYS Legislature and Governor to deal with the issues of firearm safety, the passage of this SAFE Act will not accomplish that goal,” the resolution says. “This legislature asks for repeal of the SAFE Act and for future discussions on issues involving guns to be open to public discussion and input by concerned citizens.”
