William R. Raney, 71, of 1150G The Park, Cortland, N.Y., and formerly of Massena, died at home of pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, May 25, 2011.
He was born in Ogdensburg, on June 15, 1939, to Donald S. Raney and Bessie Q. Raney of Massena, who predeceased him.
Bill is survived by his wife, Pamela Kelley Raney, whom he married on July 7, 1962. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Jane Sampson (Richard) of West Milford, N.J.; sister-in-law, Cynthia Kelley Nordby Prescott (Melvin) of Aiken, S.C.; nephew, David J. Sampson (Karen) of Westampton, N.J.; nephews and niece by marriage: Christopher K. Nordby (Ynes) of Columbia, Md., Eric C. Nordby (Kathleen) of Syracuse, and Jennifer A. Nordby (Mark L. Spina) of Daniels Island, S.C.; and many children of the foregoing relatives.
Bill graduated from Massena High School in 1957, and Syracuse University in 1961. He served as a Naval officer from 1962-1967, including tours of duty in Newport, R.I., Norfolk, Va., and Roosevelt Roads, P.R.
He taught Social Studies at Dryden Schools for 15 years, and owned and operated The Picture House, a frame shop in Cortland, for 20 years.
Bill was an avid boater, woodworker and photographer, and often volunteered his time for those in need.
He was a longtime property owner on Skaneateles Lake, and converted a boathouse into a summer cottage.
At Bill's request, there are no calling hours or funeral services. His ashes will be buried at the convenience of the family at Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, N.Y.
Bill and his family are extremely grateful for all those who helped to make his life, especially his last year and a half, so rich and rewarding.
