Graveside service for Mr. William J. Martin, 78, of Canton will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Canton with Rev. Douglas Lucia, Officiating. Mr. Martin passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus.
Friends may call at the O’Leary Funeral Home on Monday, July 19, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to United Helpers Maplewood Campus.
Surviving Mr. Martin are two sons, Wayne of Montreal and Chris of Raymondville; two daughters, Greta Sloan of Burlington, VT and Jennifer Martin, unknown; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Gary Martin.
William was born October 22, 1931 in Potsdam, the son of the late Wayne and Irene (Woodward) Martin. He attended Pyrites and Canton Schools, graduating in 1951. Mr. Martin entered the US Navy in November of 1951, serving in Korea and was awarded a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged in December 1954. A marriage to Jean Ames ended in divorce. He later married Janet Stowe, she predeceased him on January 1, 1996. Mr. Martin worked for the United States Postal Service in Canton as a street carrier and rural delivery for 22 years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a great sense of humor. William was a past member of the Canton VFW.
