William Donald Hawn, age 91, of Gouverneur passed away on Friday, February 10, 2012 at the E.J. Noble Hospital.
Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Monday from 4 - 7 p.m. His funeral service will be on Tuesday, February 14th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor David Sheppard officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Plessis followed by a celebration of life reception at the Thousand Islands Christian Church on the Simpson Road in Redwood.
William was born on September 27, 1920 in Theresa to the late William A. and Leveta M. (Snell) Hawn. He married Emma Hutton on December 9, 1942 in the Depauville Methodist Parsonage officiated by Rev. Louis Bruce. The couple lived in Clayton for one year before moving to Macomb to run their dairy farm which they ran until 1972. They then lived in Somerville, Antwerp, and Philadelphia before moving to Pine Grove Senior Housing in Gouverneur in 2007. Mrs. Hawn passed away on August 30, 2010.
In addition to farming it, Bill had worked for St. Joe Lead and then Rouse Construction where he helped build the Hermon-Dekalb School. He also worked as a mechanic for Dodd’s Motors for about thirty years, retiring in the early 1980’s.
Bill loved his boat, having picnics and spending time with his family. He always fixed things himself, tinkering on everything. He loved making maple syrup and was very musical. He enjoyed music, and played the harmonica, the “bones”, spoons, and could yodel with the best of them.
His survivors include two sons, Roger Hawn of Gouverneur, Dennis Hawn of Gouverneur and Holden Beach, NC; three daughters and their husbands, Donna and Brian Taylor of Sunset Beach, NC, Cheryl and David Roberts of Gouverneur, Linda and William Hall of North Gouverneur; nine grandchildren; one step-grandson; 12 great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter and one more great-grandchild is on the way. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Hawn is predeceased by his sister, Betty Charlton and a son who died at birth, William Hawn.
