William “Bill” L. Sheets, 78, 194 County Rt. 37, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at the Massena Memorial Hospital, after being in failing health since the fall.
He was born on September 27, 1932 in Drumore Township, PA, the son of William J. and Bertha A. Caldwell Sheets. He attended schools in Pennsylvania and Maryland. On September 20, 1951, Bill married Elizabeth E. Eller at the Baptist Parsonage in Conowingo, MD.
Bill worked for General Motors for 27 years, retiring in 1986. He also drove wrecker for Collins Brothers AAA for many years. He was a member of the Hope Community Church in Springfield, FL, and the Grace United Methodist Church, Massena. Bill was a lifetime honorary member of the Massena Rescue Squad, and the United Auto Workers. He loved woodworking, making numerous pieces of furniture for his family, going to auctions, and caring for his pets. He also enjoyed golf and watching his grandchildren play sports.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth; four children, Ronald Sheets and his wife Beth Gerrish, Hannawa Falls, Kathy L. Griffith, Albany, Robin L. and Doug Hall, Massena and Timothy D. and Tracey Sheets, Massena; 12 grandchildren, Heather, William and his wife Kirstie, Sarah, Angela and her married partner Lori, Erin, Justin and his wife Tammy, Shantel and her husband Patrick, Megan, Tiffany, Annalee, Jacob and Joshua; 12 great grandchildren, Kamie, Zachary, Shelbi, Alexis, Kelsey, Devon, Tanner, Keenan, Nicholas, Ryan, Kailey, and Adam; a sister, Lucille Adams, Lancaster, PA; a sister-in-law, Bertha Sheets, Conowingo, MD; three brothers, James and Vivian, Darlington, MD, Ellis and Pauline, Massena, and Robert of TN; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Bill was predeceased by a brother, Richard Sheets; two sisters, Louise Davis and Edith Sheets who died in infancy; and his parents.
There will be no public calling hours.The memorial service will be held Saturday, February 19, 1 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeffrey V. Aisoa, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, the Massena Rescue Squad, or Seaway Valley Ambulance.
