Funeral service for Vera E. Thorbahn, 92, of Canton, will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the O’Leary Funeral Home, 5821 US Highway 11; Canton, with Mother Evette Austin, of Grace Episcopal Church, officiating. Spring burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Vera died on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the United Helpers Maplewood Assisted Living.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, March 3, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Surviving Vera are two sons, Douglas Thorbahn and wife Ruth of Canton and David Thorbahn and wife Linda of Waddington; three daughters, Roxanne Houle and husband Ronald of AL, Deitre Gilson and husband Ronald of Canton and Denise Barstow and husband Robert of Cranberry Lake; and 17 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Leland Dafoe and wife Dorothy of TX; and two sisters, Mayfred Foster of Canton and Barbara Ferrero and husband Michael of Crary Mills.
Vera was predeceased by a son, Allan Thorbahn; brothers, Everett Dafoe and John and Edward Dafoe in infancy; and by a sister, Harriett Campbell.
Vera was born, September 21, 1921 in Canton, the daughter of the late Alfred and Iva (Birch) Dafoe. She attended Canton Schools. On November 26, 1938 she married Frank W. Thorbahn at the Canton Presbyterian Manse, with Rev. John A. Erickson, officiating. Frank predeceased her in 1971.
Vera worked for Ralph’s Restaurant, Kraft Foods, the Canton A& P, she owned the Meacham Lake Inn for three years and worked for the Canton ATC College Association for 12 years, retiring in 1983.
She enjoyed cooking, camping and crossword puzzles as well as was a life member of the Canton VFW Post 1231 Ladies Auxiliary.
