Venita R. Shippee, age 75, of Black River and formerly of Oxbow, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse.
Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur, on Monday, April 18 from 5 – 8 p.m. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Tom Bushey officiating.
Burial will be in the Spragueville Cemetery followed by a reception held at the Oxbow Presbyterian Church.
Venita was born on February 10, 1936 in Pitcairn. She was the daughter of the late Sanford and Anna (Fuller) Perrigo. She grew up in Harrisville and attended the Harrisville High School.
On November 22, 1952 Venita married Leon E. Shippee in the Gouverneur United Methodist Church. The couple lived in Oxbow until moving to Black River fifteen years ago.
Mrs. Shippee loved family gatherings and cooking big diners. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and going to church. In her later years, she truly loved time spent with her grandchildren.
Her survivors include her husband, Leon; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lauri and Jamie Andrews of Gouverneur, Robyn and John Bango of Oxbow; five sons, Mark of Theresa, Lenny of Dexter, and Randy, Timothy and Tracy, all of Black River; and her special nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two sisters, Lila Thompson of Massena, Rosie Valentine of Alabama; two brothers, Louis “Manny” Perrigo of Tennesee, Gene Perrigo of Virginia, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Venita is predeceased by her parents; a daughter, Donna Gail Shippee (May 9, 1953); three sisters, Betty Durant, Helen Jackson and Pearl Landers; and a brother, Glen Perrigo.
