Thomas “Teionhwentsihsónhkwa” Thompson, 94, Pilon Island, Akwesasne, passed away Tuesday morning, October 8, 2013 at Tsiionkwanonhso:te, Cornwall Island Long Term Care Facility.
Thomas was born September 23, 1919 in Akwesasne, Ontario, the son of the late Basil and Agatha Sawatis Thompson. On January 24, 1944 he married Theresa Cook, at the St. Regis Catholic Church. She predeceased him on November 24, 1988.
Thomas was a longshoreman for Waddington Pulp, and unloaded ships at the Docks in Cornwall. He also did odd jobs with the Mohawk Council, but his greatest enjoyment was in farming, he loved planting and gardening. Thomas also enjoyed BINGO, listening to the radio and watching television, boating and visiting with friends and family.
He is survived by his children, Catherine and Frank David, Kenneth Thompson, Frank and Pauline Thompson, Florence and Leslie Phillips, Robert and Christine Thompson, Cecilia Thompson and her companion Patrick Leaf, Allan and Margaret Thompson, Marlene Thompson and her husband Harvey Arquette, and Stewart and Theresa Thompson, all of Akwesasne; a daughter-in-law, Victoria Thompson; and 31 grandchildren, 83 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren.
Thomas is also survived by his sisters, Christina McCourt, Moose Creek, ON, and Evelyn Beebee, Enderby, BC; his brother, Richard and Charlotte Thompson, Akwesasne; a sister in law, Mae Thompson, of Akwesasne; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Angus G. Thompson, on September 27, 1979; his brothers Mike, Andrew, John, Joseph, George, Louis and Patrick Thompson; and his sisters Mary Jocko, and Sara Thompson.
Friends may call at the home of his son, Frank and Pauline Thompson, 997 Island Road, beginning Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. until Friday 10:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m., at the St. Regis Catholic Church, with Father Jerome Pastores celebrating. Burial will follow at Kateri Cemetery.
