Mr. Thomas E. Blackmer, 61, formerly of Massena, unexpectedly passed away January 22, 2011 at his home in Underhill, Vermont.
Tom graduated from Massena Central High School in 1969. He enlisted in the US Army in 1970 and while spending a tour of duty in Germany, he met his wife of almost 40 years, Ingeborg Möller. They returned to live in Florida for 25 years, before moving to Vermont in 1996. Tom went to a four year carpentry school, where he received his Completion of Apprenticeship in 1978. He excelled in custom stairs and home building, having received an award for rough carpentry in 1989. Tom built custom homes, furniture, and spiral staircases.
He was the third child of the late Erwin and Mary Burke Blackmer. He was also predeceased by his step father, Sylvester G. LaBarge; and a step sister, Sally Carmen of Rome.
Tom is survived by his wife, Inge of Underhill, VT; a son, Marc of Kassel Germany; seven brothers and sisters, James and Sandy Blackmer of Colchester, VT, Linda and Joe Bratton of Shoals, IN, David Blackmer of Tucson, AZ, Elaine and Ted McGown of Massena, Betty Blackmer of Winthrop, Joanne Jacobs of Hogansburg, and Terry and Colleen Friot of Russell; seven stepbrothers and sisters, Mary Ward of Cherry Tree, PA, Barbara Bruce of Tonawanda, Sylvester G. “Jack” and Keith LaBarge of Massena, Elwood “Peanut” and Jeanne LaBarge of Massena, Gary and Sherry LaBarge of Bloomington, IN, Cindy Beckwith of Rome, and William and Phyllis LaBarge of St. Petersburgh, FL; and forty-four nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A celebrated of Tom’s life will be celebrated in the spring at a time to be announced. Local arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
