Stewart “Leland” LaMay, age 83, of Bombay, passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the Massena Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on June 2, 1928 in Westville, the son of the late Floyd and Beulah (Bennor) LaMay, Sr. He was united in marriage to Leora “Lee” LaMay on July 7, 1956 in St. Joseph’s Church Bombay, NY. Leland started his working career with area farmers and then moved to Syracuse and got a job with Etna Window Cleaners.
When returning to South Bombay, Mr. LaMay started working for Union Local 322 as a contractor and retired in 1989 with 33 years of dedicated services. He was a proud Union member having worked on projects as the St. Lawrence Seaway, Niagara Falls, Local Missal Sites and the Salmon River Central School and Health Center. Mr. LaMay was a past member of the North Country Fiddlers Assoc. and the Moose.
In his free time, Stewart enjoyed Gardening, Birds, TV, Camping and traveling in his motor home, country music, and dancing; but he especially cherished the time he spent with his family and his dog “Prince”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Leora “Lee” LaMay; son and daughter-in-law, Leland “Butch” and Bonnie LaMay of Malone; son-in-law, Paul Gratton of Westville; grandsons Jason and Chantelle LaMay, and Joey LaMay all of FL., and Steven Gratton of Plattsburgh; granddaughter Amanda Muller of Moira; great-grandchildren Brendan and Cianna LaMay of FL and Alexis Muller of Moira; sisters Lois Cook of Bombay, Eleanor Holer of N.C. and Barbara LeMay of Florida; an aunt, Elizabeth Van Kenna of N. Lawrence; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Stewart was predeceased by his daughter, Cindy LaMay Gratton in 2009; brothers, Wellington, Bryce, Eldon and Floyd LaMay; and sisters Carolyn LaBrake, Valda Gentry and Phyllis Howard.
Friends are invited to call at the Flint Funeral Home, Moira, on Friday, October 7, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Flint Funeral Home, Moira with Rev. John Milligan officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bombay.
