Stewart Allen Soper, 73, of Edwards, passed away on October 24, 2011 at Fletcher-Allen Hospital in Burlington, VT.
Calling hours will be on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Edwards. The funeral service will be on Saturday, October 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the Edwards United Methodist Church with lay pastor Art Zehr officiating. There will also be a Masonic service on Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at the Soper Family Cemetery in Edwards.
Stewart was born on August 7, 1938 in Edwards, to Willis and Meta (Miller) Soper. He attended Edwards Central School and then went on to work at J&L Steel, where he worked for 13 years. He then went to work as a truck driver for Gouverneur Talc, where he worked for 25 years.
He married Donna Rice on July 12, 1974 at the Russell United Methodist Church. He was a member and former chief of the Edwards Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Edwards Masonic Lodge and the Gouverneur Elks Lodge. He was an avid hunter.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Donna of Edwards; six sons and four daughters-in-law, Charles and Rose Rice of Goddard, KS, Stephen Soper of Liberty, Alabama, Sherman Soper of Nikiski, Alaska, Mark and Sally Rice of Watertown, Robert and Diana Nagle of Massena and Scott and Elaine Soper of Watertown; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Catherine and Gilbert Webb of Antwerp, Dawn Randall of Hermon, Michelle and Paul Hatch of Hermon and Stacia and Scott Kroniser of Edwards; a sister, Sharlene Wells of Canton; 20 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Stewart was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Stillman Soper, who passed away in 1997; and a sister, Sharon Disotell, who passed away in 2003.
Donations may be made in Stewart’s memory to the Edwards Volunteer Fire Department.
