Mr. Stanley P. Francis, Sr., 72, fondly known as “Stosh” to many, passed away on Saturday afternoon, July 2, 2011 at the Janet MacDonnell Pavillion in Cornwall, after a lengthy illness.
Stan, a Bear Clan, was born on September 16, 1938 in Hogansburg, the son of William V. Sr. and Phoebe LaFrance Francis. He married Elizabeth M. Thompson on January 12, 1956 at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, SJ, officiating. She predeceased him on August 30, 2003.
Stan was an ironworker with Local #60 in Syracuse for 42 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Hogansburg. He loved to watch television, collecting pictures, traveling, NASCAR racing, and hockey. He also enjoyed listening to rock-n-roll music, spending time with his grandchildren, and cornbread.
He is survived by his five children, Angie and Steve Barnes, Stanley Jr. “JoJo” and Brenda Francis, Robert and Darlene Francis, Lisa and Jay Benedict, and Missy and Jay Herne, all of Akwesasne; his grandchildren, Meghan, Leah, Stan “Guy”, Tawit, Shara, Rori, Kawe, Dori, Janisa, Tasha, Saka, Tara, Jory, and Jenna; and his great-grandchildren, Jaden, Carsten, Emmett, Hector, Stan IV, Wade, Ever, Taeys, Brandon, Tianna, Aidan, Ryan Camrynn and Shia. Stan is also survived by his sisters, Phyllis (late Richard) Terrance of Buffalo; Linda (late Joe) Tessier of Akwesasne; Martha (late Ron) LaFrance of Akwesasne; and Patricia and Harvey Boots of Akwesasne; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother William V. Francis, Jr. on January 25, 2009.
The family will receive friends at the Tri-District Elders Center, Akwesasne, Ontario, beginning Monday, July 4, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. until 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday 2:00 p.m. at the St. Regis Catholic Church. Cremation will follow. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
