Shirley M. Van Pelt, age 72, formerly of Oswegatchie, passed away on August 29, 2011 at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur.
Calling hours will be on Friday, September 2, 2011 from 11:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Edwards. Her graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Oswegatchie Cemetery with Deacon Roger Benjamin officiating. Following the service there will be a reception held at the Oswegatchie Baptist Church.
Shirley was born on September 12, 1938 in Oswego to the late Frank and Florence (Brownell) Clyde. She attended the Clifton – Fine Central School and married James Van Pelt on December 5, 1956 at the Edwards United Methodist Parsonage by Rev. Kenneth Lord. James passed away on November 15, 2001.
Mrs. Van Pelt worked as a clerk for Terry’s Varity Shop in Oswegatchie. She lived in Oswegatchie for most of her life, having lived in Gouverneur for the past several years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and making crafts.
Her survivors include a daughter, Rosa Van Pelt of Gouverneur; a sister, Peggy Morrison of Star Lake; two brothers, Jack Clyde of Syracuse and Wesley Clyde of Carthage; and seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Robin O’Shea; a son, Ricky Lee Van Pelt; a sister, Mary Jane Ellis; and a brother, Gene Clyde, Sr.
