Funeral services for Shirley I. Gilbert, age 83, of 409 Oak Street, will be held on January 7, 2012 at Morley Wesleyan Church at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Paul Dettmer officiating. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on January 6, 2012 at Frary Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Gilbert passed away on January 3, 2012 at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center.
Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her husband, Walter; four sons, Randall Gilbert and his wife Jill of Rockport, MI, Steven Gilbert, Robert Gilbert of Tempe, AZ and Joseph Gilbert and his wife Laurie of Deferiet; and nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Vickie; a son, Donald; a brother, Donald Northrup; and two sisters, Geraldine Liscom and Eudora Northrop.
Mrs. Gilbert was born on August 3, 1928 in Morley, the daughter of J. Frank and Iola Wells Northrup. She attended local schools. She married Walter Gilbert on June 6, 1950 at Notre Dame Church with Rev. A.D. Charbonneau. She first worked for St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services and later worked for Sperling’s furniture. She retired from the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as Senior Stenographer for over twenty years.
Mrs. Gilbert was a member of the Red Hats, Daughters of the American Revolution and was very active in the Civil War Preservation Trust.
