Mrs. Ruth N. Compo, 85, of 32 St. Lawrence Ave., comfortably passed away at her home on Saturday morning, July 17, 2010.
Ruth was born February 2, 1925 in Massena, the daughter Seth B. and Eunice Hopson Noblett. She graduated Massena Central Schools at the age 16. On May 8, 1948, she married Donald D. Compo at Sacred Heart Rectory with Msgr. Floyd Brown, officiating. He predeceased her on October 27, 1983.
She was a homemaker who first worked as a secretary at Alcoa. She also worked with her brothers, Paul and Charlie in the restaurant business where she was well known for her coleslaw and macaroni salad.
She was a member of the Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, where she was active in the choir. She was a member of the Eastern Star, first in Massena until its merger with the Lyra Laurentian Chapter #230 in Norwood and its Grandmother’s Club. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, where she held several offices; and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Winthrop. In addition, she was a member of the Birthday Club and an honorary member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence.
She enjoyed painting, ceramics, dancing, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed bowling, having been in many leagues.
She is survived by her four daughters, Eunice Shippee and her husband, William of Winthrop, Betty MacDonald of Waddington, Rev. Belle Burgoyne of Waddington and Christine Compo-Martin and her husband, Ryne of Brasher Falls; 10 grandchildren, Jonathan, Emma, Darin, Donald, Dawn, Ruth, Eric, Frederick, Joseph, and Matthew; 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by five brothers, Charles H., Seth, Frederick, Paul, and William Noblett who was killed in World War II.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., where members of the Eastern Star will meet at 7:30 p.m. for a service. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 1:00 p.m. at the Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, Massena, with Rev. Judy VanKennan and Rev. Donald Manfred, officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, North Lawrence.
