Ruth Evelyn Kyle, age 81, long time resident of Potsdam, passed away on January 5, 2011 after a brief illness. She was born January 4, 1930, the first of three daughters to Rev. George and Lillian Moyers Landis. She moved to New York City after high school, working as an analyst for a public opinion research firm and as an electrocardiogram technician. It was at a science fiction convention that she met her future husband, noted science fiction fan, author, and publisher David A. Kyle.
A life-long science fiction and fantasy fan and enthusiastic convention-goer, she served as Secretary of the 14th World Science Fiction Convention held in New York City in 1956 and the next year accompanied her new husband on their honeymoon to England and the 1957 Worldcon there, together with 53 friends and in-laws on a specially chartered flight.
While living in England in the 1970s, she was baptized and confirmed in the Church of England at the Church of St James, Weybridge, Surrey and remained active in church activities for the rest of her life, singing in the choir and participating in the Trinity Guild of Trinity Church, Potsdam.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years; son Arthur; granddaughters Alisa and Marina of San Francisco; a daughter, Kerry; and a grandson, Kyle of Mohegan Lake.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that small donations may be made in her name to her beloved church of 50 years, Trinity Church, 8 Maple Street Potsdam, NY 13676-1181 www.trinitychurchpotsdam.org. A memorial service will be held in spring 2011.
