Mr. Doran was born on March 26, 1939 in Benson Mines, the son of the late William and Rose (Bishop) Doran. He spent his first year living on Cat Mountain, near Cranberry Lake, where his father was the care taker of the fire tower. His love of the Adirondack Mountains started then and continued throughout his life. A passion for the area kept him researching regional history and talking about its development over the years. Tales of the prominent people, towns and companies throughout the years were his favorite topic of discussion. While working, exploring, hunting or fishing, he enjoyed roaming the region looking for the next bit of exciting history to add to his collection of lore.
An outstanding cook, his meals were the center of many gatherings of family and friends over the years. From gourmet French or Italian cuisine to regional recipes for game and wild harvested plants, nuts, berries and herbs, he delighted in trying to recreate recipes from the original settlers of the region. He passed on to his children and grandchildren a love of the outdoors, reading and cooking. He was a dedicated collector of coins and stamps, and was known as a “handyman” around the neighborhood, with a shed full of parts for bikes, cars and other tools.
His career included over 18 years with the Jones & Laughlin iron ore mine in Star Lake, and over 18 years with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. He served as a volunteer firefighter and is a Life Member of the NYS Volunteer Fire Association.
Robert married Suzanne Mae Burr on August 14, 1961. She predeceased him on Sept. 21, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Morristown Volunteer Fire Department, Morristown.
