Robert E. “Bobby” Ashley, 79, Massena

Mr. Robert E. “Bobby” Ashley, 79, of 10 Orchard Road, unexpectedly passed away Monday afternoon, March 5, 2012 in the emergency room at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Bobby was born March 23, 1932 in Massena the son of the late Earl H. and Evelyn M. Perry Ashley. He graduated from Massena High School in 1950. On March 15, 1952, he married Constance V. Hughes at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. J.M. Wyzzkowski, officiating.

Bobby worked construction for many years and was the business agent for Local #322 in Massena until his retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Lawrence Council #1141, the Italian-American Civic Association, and the Massena Exempt Firemen. Bobby was an avid golfer and a former member of the Massena Country Club. When he was younger, he was a golden golf boxer having boxed at Madison Square Gardens. He was also a football player playing with the Warriors. Bobby enjoyed gardening, doing his yard work, and wintering for many winters in Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Connie; his two children, Michael and Gail Ashley of Massena and Cynthia and Frank Harmon of Webster; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; three sisters, Noreen LePage, Dorothy and Paul King, and Nancy and Robert Brothers, all of Massena; two brothers, John and Judy Ashley of Minola and Earl Jr. and Cathy Ashley of Wilson Hill; and many nieces and nephews.

Bobby was predeceased by his sister, Shirley LePage on September 14, 2001; and a brother, Jerry in infancy.

Friends may call Wednesday, March 7, 2012 from 2-4 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena where services will be held at 4 p.m. with Rev. Donald Manfred officiating.  Burial will be held in the spring in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
