Richard K. Smith, 75, Gouverneur

Richard K. Smith, 75, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.

Richard was born July 31, 1936 in Gouverneur, the son of Douglas and Winnie LaQuier Smith. Richard graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1955, and he served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1962.

Mr. Smith was employed in Gouverneur at Cappellino's Meat Market, the Gralyn Theater, and retired from Gouverneur Central School in 1998 after 35 years. He enjoyed gardening, refinishing furniture, fishing, and coin collecting. Richard married Leona I. Zimmer on March 8, 1967.

Richard is survived by his wife, Leona; two children, Heidi Wittmer of Paxton, MA and Richard Smith of Morrisville; two stepchildren, Donald Sipher of Roanoke, VA and Dixie Yonkers of Troy; nine grandchildren, Catherine Aday, John Sipher, Joseph, Arden, and Ella Mary Yonkers, Keith and Kevin Wittmer, and Ben and Ian Smith; three great grandchildren, Ephriam, Elizabeth and Daniel Aday; two brothers, Donald Smith of Gouverneur and his twin Robert Smith of Gouverneur; a sister, Mary Dawley of Albany; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, Howard "Jim" Smith.

Calling hours will be Saturday, February 25th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with David Mayo, pastor of the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Hamilton officiating and burial in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur.
