Richard F. Barr, age 84, of Gouverneur, passed away on June 30, 2011 at the E.J. Noble Hospital.
Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. His funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in the Cedars Cemetery, Black Lake.
Richard was born on August 14, 1926 in Ogdensburg and adopted in infancy by the late Eugene C. and Viola A. Barr. He graduated from the last class from Brier Hill High School in 1943. Richard Enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He attended Diesel School at Richmond, VA and Chicago, IL. He then served in a landing craft unit in the South Pacific in WWII until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Richard married Mildred E. Waite at the home of the groom’s parents on June 20, 1946. The couple just celebrated their 65 years together. He was employed by the late Geo. O’Leary International Harvester dealer for four years before moving to Gouverneur in 1950 where he was then employed by the J.E. McAllaster Feed Co., later to become the J.E. McAllaster Oil Co. He continued with subsequent sales and mergers involving Ultramar Oil, Atlantic Refining and Atlantic Fuels and Marketing as a maintenance mechanic and retired in 1992 from the International Sun Oil Co.
He enjoyed retirement at the family home on Rock Island St. Road and was the proud father of three sons, Larry R. (Deborah) Barr of Spragueville, David L. Barr of Cleveland, and Alan F. (Amy) Barr of Gouverneur; a daughter, Amy M.(Gary) Meier of Catasauqua, PA; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Courtney Barr.
