Funeral arrangements for Reverend Alan Turner Barnes of Morristown, will be held on Monday, January 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Frary Funeral Home. Rev. Barnes died at the age of 98 at Hepburn Hospital in Ogdensburg. Calling hours will be Sunday 2 – 5 p.m.
His beloved wife of 48 years, Gladys Rachel Arnold preceded him in death in 2001. He is survived by two devoted sons, Gordon and Arnold Barnes.
He was born on June 17, 1912 in Westmount, Montreal, Canada, the son of Wilfred and Ann Monroe Barnes. He received his B.A. from McGill University, and his M.A. from Teacher’s College, Columbia University in New York City. He made Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior at the age of twenty and attended several Bible Colleges in Canada. After 25 years of teaching high school in Canada, he became a minister and pastored several churches in Canada. He moved to the United States in 1971 to minister for the United Methodist Church in northern New York State where he pastored churches at Morristown, Galilee, Chasm Falls, Owls Head, Brasher Falls, Buckton and North Lawrence, Philadelphia and Evans Mills, New York. After retirement, he remained active visiting the prison near Ogdensburg, New York, the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, and St. Joseph’s and Cedars nursing homes. He was an accomplished piano player whose passion was playing hymns and other Christian music as well as an avid reader, and he enjoyed socializing.
His funeral will be held at Frary Funeral Home in Ogdensburg with Tom Nichols officiating. He will be laid to rest in Pine Hill Cemetery in Eel Weir, New York.
