Raymond Samuel Nielsen, 85, of Josephine St., died Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg. He was preceded in death by his wife of 12 years, Margaret Anderson Nielsen who passed away in May 2002. They were married in Nov. 4, 1989 in Deep River, CT.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 23rd at 2:15 p.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton with Rev. William G. Hart officiating. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Burial and Military Honors to follow be in the Union Cemetery, DeKalb Jct.
He was born Feb. 28, 1926 in Hartford, CT son of Samuel and Minna (Thompson) Nielsen. He graduated Daniel Hand High in CT. In 1943 at the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy and served in WWII and the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged as Chief Petty Officer in 1954.
Raymond worked at various firms as a truck driver including Nat’l Gypsum, Standard Oil and the Fiorelli’s Furniture in Old Saybrook, CT throughout the 60’s. During the 70’s he worked for CT Valley Egg Co. and in the 80’s to mid 90’s he was employed as a truck driver and groundskeeper at Whalen Engineering in Chester, CT. He was a member of Westbrook (CT) Vol. Fire Dept for many years and a member of the VFW in Deep River.
He enjoyed sailing and restored his own sailboat, watching golf and the Indy 500 on Television, as well as dancing and working on his vehicles.
Surviving are his three daughters, Judith Sanford and husband Dave of West Potsdam, Kris C. Bryant and husband Dale of Bristol, CT and Kathryn Hughes and partner Paul Huska of DeKalb Jct.; a close cousin, Pearl Rector; four grandchildren, Justin Harper of Claremore, OK, Eli Harper of Castle, OK, Alice Harper of Nicholville and Tiffany Bryant of Plainville, CT; and five great-grandchildren.
