Mrs. Phyllis M. McCutcheon, 85, of 344 ½ Main Street, passed away early Thursday morning, March 10, 2011 at Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been admitted from the St. Regis Nursing Home on Wednesday.
Phyllis was born July 3, 1925 in Massena, the daughter of Ernest J. and Isabel Hickling Cline. She graduated from Massena High School in 1943. She first married Edward Roberts in 1948 at the First United Methodist Church, Massena, which ended in divorce. She later married Joseph M. McCutcheon in Pennsylvania, he predeceased her on April 16, 1985.
Phyllis first worked at JJ Newberry’s before attending St. Lawrence State School of Nursing in Ogdensburg. She then worked in the Nurses Cadet Corp and for Oneida Ltd in Oneida Castle before going to Rome State School, where she was a caretaker. She retired in 1985 after 28 years of service and moved back to Massena.
Phyllis sang in the choir at the First United Methodist Church and played the trombone while in high school. She enjoyed traveling having been to California, Florida, and Colorado. In addition, she loved to play cards, do word search and crossword puzzles, going for rides to watch the deer, and watching television especially her soap operas. Phyllis will be known for her generosity to others.
She is survived by her son, Lynn and Jackie Roberts of Massena; a granddaughter, Jennifer; a great granddaughter, Mia; a brother, Thomas and Alice Cline of Massena; a dear friend and caregiver, Linda M. Ashley; and many nieces and nephews.
Phyllis was predeceased by four brothers, E. Ralph, Paul E. Kenneth E. and Carl Cline.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Monday beginning at 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 3:00 p.m. with her nephew, Rev. Martin E. Cline, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Massena Center Cemetery.
