MASSENA – Phyllis L. St. Amand, 89, of Dover Street, peacefully passed away Saturday morning, July 2, 2022, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Phyllis was born on September 29, 1932, in Massena, the daughter of the late Daniel and Bernice (Martin) LaFlesh. She attended school in Massena, graduating from Massena High School in 1950. On August 18, 1951, she married Philip W. St. Amand at the Sacred Heart Rectory with Msgr. John Bellamy, officiating.
Phyllis was a dedicated and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family. She also worked for a time at the Bursar’s Office at SUNY Potsdam. She was an extremely talented seamstress, avid baker and flower gardener, and she proudly attended events of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed researching family genealogy and had a great love of music. Throughout her life, Phyllis had a deep and abiding faith as a communicant of the Church of the Sacred Heart, where she regularly volunteered to clean the church and made countless cakes as a member of the bereavement committee.
Phyllis is survived by her loving and devoted husband of nearly 71 years, Philip; her children and their spouses, Philip A. St. Amand of Massena; Jane and Scott Shupe of Bridgeport; Robert and Jeanette St. Amand of Baldwinsville; Ronald and Debbie St. Amand of Milton, Vermont; Randall and Tricia St. Amand of Milton, Vermont; Nancy and Greg LaPointe of Massena; Sally and Kenneth Elliott of Johnson City; Michael St. Amand of Essex Junction, Vermont; and Mary and Robert Elman of Massena; 21 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She is additionally survived by her sisters, Sue and Raoul Brodeur of Massena and Carol Jones, also of Massena, and numerous nieces and nephews. She loved her family unconditionally and worked tirelessly to nurture and support it.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by son William; a grandson, Mark St. Amand at birth; a granddaughter, Ann LaPointe, at birth; her sisters, Ruth Murphy and Norma Cassada; and her brother, Roger D. LaFlesh.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where friends may call on Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Sacred Heart at 10:00 AM on Wednesday. Burial will follow services in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, who provided exceptional care to her and family during her illness, or Trinity Catholic Endowment Fund, as Phyllis believed in a strong Catholic education.
