PARISHVILLE -- Paul Baktari, age 75, passed away on July 1, 2019 at Advent Hospital in Palm Coast, FL. He was born August 30, 1943 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
He is survived by his wife, Janine, and one sister-in-law, Karen Manley of Sebastian, FL.
Paul moved to the United States after completing his formal education in Switzerland, and first attended college at the University of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. He earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Economics in 1973 and 1974, respectively, at the University of Eastern Tennessee in Johnson City. He then pursued his doctorate in Labor and Industrial Relations at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, and received his degree in 1980.
Paul started his career that same year as Assistant Professor of Industrial Relations at the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies in Charleston, WV. He came to SUNY Potsdam in 1982 to develop an interdisciplinary program in Labor and Industrial Relations at the college. Paul was director of that program until 1991, when he became the Chairperson of the Economics Department at SUNY Potsdam. He served in that capacity until 2002. He retired from SUNY Potsdam as an Associate Professor in 2009.
Paul especially enjoyed the company of family and good friends. In spite of chronic illness, he loved gardening, cooking, classical music, and international travel. He was a gracious host and was happiest in conversation with neighbors in the garden or in dinner parties with close friends. He will be especially missed for his warmth, intelligence and joyful sense of humor.
Paul requested that his remains be cremated, and that no formal services be held. The family wishes that any private tribute be made in donations in his name to the Parasitology Lab at Jacobi Medical Center, Building #1, 5th Floor Room 5NW-9, 1400 Pelham Parkway South, Bronx, NY 10461 or to the MDS Foundation, Inc., 4573 S. Broad Street, Suite 150, Yardville, NJ 08620, www.mds-foundation.org.
