Funeral services for Merlin “Jerry” O. Cleland, age 95, of Lafayette Street in Ogdensburg will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral with Rev. Scott Belina officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mr. Cleland passed away at his home on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013.
Surviving are three sons, Paul Cleland of Valatie NY, David Cleland of Fulton NY and Timothy Cleland of St. Petersburg FL; a daughter, Janet Cleland of St. Petersburg FL; two grandchildren, William Cleland and Thomas Cleland both of Valatie, NY. His wife, Phyllis E. Cleland and a sister, Elsie Nugent predeceased him.
Jerry was born on August 21, 1918 in Rensselaer Falls NY, a son of the late Arthur and Blanche (Streeter) Cleland. He graduated from Rensselaer Falls School in 1936 and married Phyllis E. Hunter on Feb 15, 1941 at St. Mary’s Rectory. In 1941, he enlisted in the US Army and was in the Field Artillery Unit during WWII. He received his honorable discharge in 1945, and became employed at Diamond International for a few years, and then went to work for the US Postal Service where he worked as a mail carrier for 26 years. Jerry retired in 1976.
He was a member of the National Association of Federal Employees, The VFW and the GLF (Grange League Federation). He enjoyed watching baseball and coaching little league for Kiwanis.
